Connecting Nature and Culture for a Sustainable Future

The second phase of the workshop will take place on May 20-21, 2025, at the University of Coimbra as part of a broader initiative co-organized by JPI Climate, JPI Cultural Heritage, the Centre for Functional Ecology at the University of Coimbra, with the ‘patronage’ of the UNESCO MAB Programme.

Set against the backdrop of the 20th anniversary of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and the recent UN Pact for the Future, this congress aims to foster an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary dialogue between natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, and policymakers. â€‹

ABOUT THE CONGRESS

The event will bring together keynote speakers, researchers, practitioners, and community representatives to discuss innovative approaches to integrating cultural heritage, biodiversity conservation, and sustainability.

The congress will feature:

  • Keynote presentations by internationally recognized experts, including representatives from UNESCO and leading research institutions.

  • Thematic panels and roundtables discussing methodologies, policy integration, and practical applications.

  • Presentation of case studies highlighting the role of local communities, traditional knowledge, and nature-based solutions in sustainability.

  • Workshops and interactive sessions exploring citizen science, digital humanities, georeferencing tools, and AI in ecosystem services research.

OUTPUTS

The event will culminate in a collective publication and policy recommendations, strengthening the integration of cultural heritage, environmental conservation, and sustainability strategies in global research and policy frameworks.
